Upper Connection Cable Tray

Upper cable trays are connected using clamps, threaded rods, washers, and hex nuts to ensure secure alignment, load support, and proper grounding.

Mechanical Connection

To connect an upper cable tray section:

  1. Thread the upper hex nut onto the all-thread rod approximately 203 mm (8") above the desired tray bottom position ( ).
  2. Position the clamp (SC) around the tray siderails. Place a round washer on the threaded rod before lifting the tray section so the rod passes through the clamp holes.
  3. Add a second washer and hex nut on top of the clamp, then adjust the nuts to raise the tray to the correct elevation. Ensure the clamp is firmly secured to prevent movement.
  4. For double ladder hanger clamps (DC) supporting two adjacent trays, slide one half of the clamp over the top of the existing tray's siderail, lift the new tray section, and thread the remaining nuts and washers until the desired height is reached ( ).
Alignment and Stability
  • Ensure the tray is level and properly aligned with existing sections to prevent sagging or misalignment ( ).
  • Use splice plates or bolted connections for straight runs, which provide strong, reliable joints suitable for heavy cable loads ( ).
  • Quick-connect systems may be used for faster installation but are often manufacturer-specific ( ).
Grounding and Bonding
  • All metallic cable trays should be bonded together to maintain electrical continuity and prevent potential differences ( ).
  • If the tray is used as an Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC), ensure proper bonding with grounding clamps. Avoid bare copper in aluminum trays to prevent corrosion; use insulated conductors with tin or zinc-plated connectors ( ).
Load Considerations
  • Verify that the support spacing and load capacity meet project requirements. Maximum load per hanger typically ranges from 318 kg (700 lbs) to 340 kg (750 lbs) with support spacing up to 3.6 m ( ).
  • Conduct a load test after installation to ensure the tray can bear the weight of cables without deformation ( ).
Maintenance and Safety
  • Secure connections allow for easy cable addition or removal and reduce the risk of sagging or electrical hazards ( ).
  • Follow local electrical codes and manufacturer instructions to ensure compliance and long-term durability ( ).

By following these steps, the upper cable tray sections will be securely connected, properly aligned, and safely grounded, ensuring a reliable and durable cable management system.
