Cable trays on poles

Installing cable trays on poles requires careful planning, proper support design, and adherence to safety standards to ensure secure and efficient cable management.Planning and Preparation

Before installation, obtain approved shop drawings showing the cable tray route, dimensions, installation height, support system, and the type of cables to be carried . Check for potential clashes with other services such as HVAC ducts, fire pipes, or drainage systems, and resolve any conflicts with the responsible engineer . Ensure all materials, including trays, fittings, and fasteners, are available and inspected for damage .

Selecting the Right Cable Tray and Supports

Choose a cable tray type suitable for pole installation, such as ladder, perforated, or wire mesh trays . For pole mounting, use brackets, clamps, or channel supports designed to secure trays vertically while maintaining stability . Ensure the support system can handle the maximum load of the cables, typically up to 318–340 kg per hanger, and maintain proper spacing between supports, usually not exceeding 3.6 meters .

Installation Steps
  1. Mark the Pole Locations: Measure and mark the positions where the trays will be mounted, ensuring alignment and level installation.
  2. Install Pole Brackets or Clamps: Secure brackets or clamps to the poles using bolts or appropriate fasteners. Ensure they are level and firmly attached.
  3. Mount the Cable Tray: Place the tray onto the brackets or clamps. For multi-layer installations, maintain a vertical separation of at least 30 cm between trays to prevent interference between electrical and communication cables .
  4. Secure the Tray: Fasten the tray to the supports using bolts, nuts, or clamps. Check that the tray is stable and can support the intended cable load.
  5. Lay the Cables: Deposit cables into the tray carefully, avoiding sharp bends or overloading. Center-hung supports can facilitate easier cable placement from both sides .
  6. Final Checks: Verify alignment, load distribution, and secure fastening. Ensure compliance with safety standards such as BS EN 61537 for cable trays .
Safety and Maintenance
  • Do not use cable trays as walkways or ladders, as this can cause injury and damage the system .
  • Inspect trays periodically for corrosion, loose fasteners, or overloading.
  • Maintain clear access for future cable additions or maintenance. By following these steps and using proper materials and supports, cable trays can be safely and efficiently installed on poles, providing a durable and organized cable management system .
