SC Fiber Optic Panel Connection Method

SC fiber optic panels are typically connected using SC patch cables or SC adapters, with attention to connector type (UPC or APC) and fiber mode (single-mode or multimode).SC Connector Types

SC panels can accommodate two main types of SC connectors:

  • SC/UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Flat end face, lower insertion loss, suitable for digital systems that are less sensitive to back reflection. Commonly used in general-purpose networks and data centers .
  • SC/APC (Angled Physical Contact): Angled end face (usually 8°), slightly higher insertion loss but superior return loss, ideal for analog CATV, PON, and high-precision optical systems where back reflection must be minimized . The connector type is visually indicated: blue for UPC and green for APC .
What to Connect
  1. SC Patch Cables: These are fiber optic cables terminated with SC connectors on one or both ends. They connect the SC panel to network devices, optical transceivers, or other panels. Ensure the patch cable matches the panel's fiber type (single-mode or multimode) and connector type (UPC or APC) to avoid signal loss .
  2. SC Adapters/Couplers: If you need to join two SC connectors, use an SC adapter. For APC connectors, use an SC/APC adapter to maintain proper alignment and minimize insertion loss. Never mate APC to UPC, as the angled and flat faces will not align correctly, causing significant signal degradation .
  3. SFP Modules: In some setups, SC panels may interface with SFP transceivers. While most modern SFPs use LC connectors, legacy networks may use SC connectors. Ensure the SFP module's connector type matches the SC panel or use an appropriate adapter .
Best Practices
  • Match fiber mode: Single-mode fibers should connect to single-mode ports, and multimode fibers to multimode ports.
  • Clean connectors: Use fiber cleaning tools to remove dust or debris from ferrule ends before connecting .
  • Avoid repeated plugging/unplugging: This reduces wear and maintains signal integrity .
  • Color coding: Use the color of the connector or adapter to quickly identify UPC vs APC and single-mode vs multimode fibers . By following these guidelines, SC fiber optic panels can be reliably connected to network devices, other panels, or optical transceivers while maintaining optimal signal quality.
