GESTIONVAL ODNODN INFRASTRUCTURE Technical Inquiry

MPO Jumper Types

MPO jumpers are classified by application, connection type, core count, and polarity to support high-density fiber optic networks.Classification by Application
  1. MPO Trunk Fiber Jumpers: Serve as permanent connections between MTP/MPO modules, enabling flexible reconfiguration on fiber optic panels. They are typically used in backbone connections for data centers and high-capacity networks .
  2. MPO Branch (Breakout) Fiber Jumpers: Provide a transition from multi-fiber MPO connectors to single or duplex connectors (LC, SC, FC, ST), allowing distribution to individual devices or ports .
Classification by Connection Type
  1. Transfer Type MPO Jumpers: Include ribbon or bundled fiber jumpers that can transfer 2–24 cores through 0.9 mm or 2.0 mm fiber branches. Connector types are customizable based on user requirements .
  2. Non-Transfer Type MPO Jumpers: Standard MPO jumpers without branching, used for direct multi-fiber connections.
Classification by Core Count
  • Common Core Counts: 8, 12, 16, 24 fibers per MPO ferrule.
  • High-Density Options: 32, 48, 72, or even 96 cores for large-scale data center applications, supporting 40G, 100G, and 400G networks .
Classification by Polarity

MPO jumpers are also classified by polarity methods to ensure correct Tx-Rx fiber alignment:

  1. Method A: Straight-through (key-up to key-down), often used with cassettes.
  2. Method B: Straight-through (key-up to key-up), achieved with flipped patch cords or modules.
  3. Method C: Pairwise flipped within the trunk itself, used for specific high-speed parallel optics .
Additional Features
  • MTP® vs MPO: MTP® is a high-performance, enhanced MPO connector with better mechanical durability and lower insertion loss, fully compatible with standard MPOs .
  • Fiber Types: Multi-mode (OM3, OM4) and single-mode (G652D, G657A2) fibers are available depending on network requirements .
  • Applications: Data centers, LAN interconnections, FTTX, high-density ODFs, and optical signal distribution in commercial or industrial buildings . MPO jumper classification ensures efficient, high-density, and scalable fiber optic deployment, reducing cabling clutter and supporting rapid network upgrades.
