Eplan as a distribution box

In EPLAN, a distribution box is best represented using a structure box, which organizes components without assigning device-specific properties.Structure Box Overview

A structure box in EPLAN is a graphical tool used to indicate the location or structural grouping of devices, such as distribution boxes, drive cabinets, or field devices . Unlike black boxes, structure boxes do not represent a device themselves and cannot be dimensioned or numbered, but they can contain multiple components while maintaining their individual attributes . This makes them ideal for modeling a distribution box, where the focus is on organization and hierarchy rather than device-specific functions.

Key Features for Distribution Boxes
  • DT Assignment: Structure boxes can have a displayed device type (DT), but this does not make them a device . Components inside inherit their own DTs.
  • Component Containment: Any element inserted into a structure box remains fully functional and retains its properties, allowing you to group breakers, terminals, or relays logically within the distribution box .
  • Hierarchy Management: Multiple structure boxes can be nested, which is useful for complex distribution panels with sub-sections or multiple circuits .
  • Cross-Referencing: Structure boxes can be made cross-reference capable, helping maintain clarity when the same distribution box appears in multiple schematic pages .
Advantages
  • Clearly displays the structural level and relationships of components within the distribution box.
  • Facilitates management and maintenance of schematics by visually grouping related elements.
  • Supports scalable schematics, as text and graphical elements adjust with page scaling without affecting panel layout readability .
Limitations
  • Cannot express device-specific functions or technical characteristics; it is purely organizational .
  • Cannot be dimensioned or numbered like a black box or PLC box, so it is not suitable for representing individual devices that require detailed specifications.
Practical Tip

To model a distribution box in EPLAN:

  1. Insert a structure box on your schematic page.
  2. Place all relevant components (circuit breakers, terminals, relays) inside the box.
  3. Use the Main placement property if cross-referencing is needed across multiple pages.
  4. Adjust the box size and nesting to reflect the physical layout of the distribution panel. By using a structure box, you maintain a clear, organized schematic while accurately representing the distribution box as a functional unit without altering the properties of individual components .
