How to obtain input values for relay protection

Input values for relay protection are obtained from current and voltage transformers, processed into phasors and RMS values, and converted into per-unit values for use in protective relay functions.Sources of Input Values

Protective relays rely on current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) to measure electrical quantities in the power system. CTs provide scaled-down current signals, while VTs provide scaled-down voltage signals suitable for relay input. These transformers ensure that the relay receives accurate and safe signals corresponding to the actual system conditions .

Signal Acquisition in Numerical Relays

Modern numerical relays include a signal acquisition function that samples the inputs from CTs and VTs. The sampled signals are processed into phasors (magnitude and phase) and RMS values, which are then used by the relay's protection algorithms . The acquisition process may include:

  • Anti-aliasing filtering to remove high-frequency noise.
  • Sample & Hold functions to stabilize the signal for processing.
  • Conversion of delta-connected transformer signals into equivalent values for relay calculations, although star (Wye) connections are preferred .
Conversion to Per-Unit Values

Once the relay receives the processed signals, they are converted into per-unit (pu) values using base values entered in the relay configuration. This standardization allows the relay to operate correctly across different voltage and current levels in the system .

Additional Considerations
  • Relay programming may require Boolean logic and truth tables to define protection schemes, which depend on accurate input values from CTs and VTs .
  • Input values must reflect the actual operating conditions, including fault currents, normal load currents, and voltage variations, to ensure reliable relay operation .
  • Testing and calibration of CTs, VTs, and relay settings are essential to verify that the input values are correctly interpreted by the relay . By following these steps, engineers can obtain accurate input values for relay protection, ensuring that relays respond correctly to faults and maintain system reliability.
