Components of Communication Optical Cables

Communication optical cables are composed of a core, cladding, protective coatings, strength members, and outer sheaths, each designed to ensure efficient light transmission and mechanical durability.Core and Cladding

At the heart of an optical cable is the core, a thin strand of ultra-pure glass or plastic that transmits light signals over long distances. The cladding surrounds the core and has a slightly lower refractive index, ensuring that light remains confined within the core through total internal reflection. These components are typically made from silica glass, sometimes doped with other chemicals to optimize transmission and reduce signal loss .

Protective Coatings

The core and cladding are coated with a polymer layer that provides mechanical protection against scratches, bending, and environmental factors. Common materials include acrylate polymers, which are flexible, UV-resistant, and moisture-resistant. Coatings prevent microbending and macrobending losses that could degrade signal quality .

Strength Members

Optical fibers are fragile, so strength members are included to protect against tension, crushing, and environmental stress. Materials such as aramid yarn (Kevlar®), fiberglass rods, or steel wires are used depending on the application. These members ensure the fiber remains stable during installation and operation, particularly in outdoor or armored cables .

Sheath and Armor

The sheath surrounds the cable core and strength members, providing mechanical protection and moisture resistance. It may consist of inner and outer layers, including semi-hermetic bonded metal strips (PAP or PSP) or plastic jackets. For harsh environments, additional armor layers such as steel tape, stainless steel, or nylon may be applied to protect against direct burial, climbing, underwater deployment, or rodent damage .

Cable Core Structures

Optical cables can have different core arrangements, including layer-twisted, skeleton (trough), belt, or central beam tube types. The placement of strength members varies by design: some use a central core, while others place reinforcement around the periphery .

Fiber Types

Fiber optic cables may contain single-mode fibers (8–10 µm core) for long-distance, high-bandwidth applications, or multimode fibers (50–62.5 µm core) for shorter distances such as campus networks. The choice of fiber type affects signal dispersion and transmission distance .

Summary

Each component of a communication optical cable—from the core and cladding that guide light, to the coatings, strength members, and sheaths that protect the fiber—plays a critical role in ensuring high-speed, reliable, and durable data transmission. Understanding these elements is essential for proper cable selection, deployment, and maintenance in modern communication networks .
