GESTIONVAL ODNODN INFRASTRUCTURE Technical Inquiry

The fiber optic cable has been removed

Fiber optic cables must be removed carefully to avoid damage to the delicate glass fibers and prevent eye injury from invisible laser light.Safety Precautions

Fiber optic cables transmit data using infrared light, which is invisible and can damage the retina if viewed directly. Always assume the cable is active and never look into the end of the fiber or the port of the device it was connected to. Before handling, power down the equipment by unplugging the modem, ONT, or fiber gateway to ensure the fiber port is inactive. Keep the work area clean and free of dust, as even microscopic particles can damage the fiber tip .

Identify Connector Type

Most residential fiber optic cables use SC (Subscriber Connector) or LC (Lucent Connector) types:

  • SC connectors: Rectangular with a push-pull latching mechanism; release by depressing the plastic tab on top.
  • LC connectors: Smaller, roughly half the size of SC; release by squeezing the plastic clip inward toward the connector body . Understanding the connector type is crucial to avoid applying excessive force, which can damage the cable or port.
Removal Procedure
  1. Stabilize the Device: Hold the modem or ONT with one hand to prevent it from moving while disconnecting the cable.
  2. Engage the Release Mechanism: For SC connectors, depress the tab; for LC connectors, squeeze the clip.
  3. Gently Pull the Cable: Once the lock is disengaged, carefully pull the cable straight out without bending or twisting the fiber. Avoid sharp bends, as the glass fiber is extremely fragile .
Additional Tips
  • Inspect the cable for kinks, bends, or damage before removal.
  • Do not force a stuck connector; if it resists, consult a certified technician.
  • Store or cap the fiber ends after removal to prevent contamination or damage. By following these steps and precautions, you can safely remove fiber optic cables from modems or ONTs while protecting both the equipment and your eyes.
