CCD detector inside the spectrophotometer

It leverages the technology of CCDs, which are highly sensitive photon detectors, capable of transforming light into electronic signals. CCDs are multi-channel, silicon array detectors in which photosensitive semi conducting silicon pixels collect incident light and transfer. CCDs represented a revolutionary step forward in detecting at UV to near-IR wavelengths, particularly for spectroscopy. Their two-dimensional nature and unique combination of sensitivity, speed, low noise, ruggedness and durability in a compact and relatively economical package still are. Virtually all spectroscopy between 200 nm and 1100 nm is performed using a silicon-based multichannel detector and a spectrograph. Multichannel detection has enabled spectroscopy to be used in research and analytical applications that previously were not possible with single channel scanning. CCD/CMOS is the future of spectrometer analysis. Optical Emission Spectrometers (OES) make use of detectors that convert incident light (optical signal) into electrical impulses that can then be measured quantitatively and compared using a database, to give the required output – the elemental. The detector is a key component of the spectrometer, capturing photons after they pass through the optical system and have been separated by wavelength. Two big players dominate here: charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensors. The main thing? CCDs excel at low-noise.
