Fiber optic connector closure reinforcing core

The reinforcing core in a fiber optic closure provides mechanical support and strain relief for fiber cables, ensuring secure, stable, and low-loss connections.Function of the Reinforcing Core

The reinforcing core is a structural component inside fiber optic splice closures that strengthens the cable entry points and protects the fibers from mechanical stress, bending, or pulling forces during installation and operation. It helps maintain the integrity of the fiber splices and prevents damage that could lead to signal loss or network downtime . The core also ensures that the closure can withstand environmental and mechanical stresses, such as vibration, tension, or accidental impacts.

Installation Process
  1. Reserve and Cut: A section of the reinforcing core, typically around 30mm, is reserved and unnecessary portions are trimmed using a special cutting plier .
  2. Cable Preparation: After determining the number of fiber cable inlets and outlets, the corresponding nuts and gaskets are placed on the cables in sequence. The fiber cable is then fixed to a cable fixing device, and the reinforcing core is attached to its dedicated fixing device .
  3. Sealing: Seal tape is used to enlarge the fiber cable diameter to fit the inlet/outlet tube, followed by pushing gaskets into place and tightening with an octagonal nut . Proper cleaning and preparation of the seal tape are essential to ensure a secure fit.
  4. Fiber Management: Inside the closure, fibers are wound in the fiber optic splice tray (FOST) with a minimum bend radius of 30mm, and protective sleeves are applied to maintain fiber safety .
Importance in Fiber Optic Closures
  • Mechanical Protection: Prevents fiber breakage and maintains splice integrity under tension or bending.
  • Environmental Sealing: Works with gaskets and seal tape to ensure closures remain waterproof and dustproof .
  • Network Reliability: Reduces the risk of attenuation or signal loss by keeping fibers properly aligned and supported.
  • Ease of Maintenance: Facilitates organized fiber management, allowing technicians to add or remove fibers without disturbing existing connections .
Applications

Reinforcing cores are used in various types of closures, including dome-type, mechanical, and inline closures, suitable for aerial, wall-mounted, or underground installations . They are compatible with closures handling 24 to 144 fiber cores, providing flexibility for both small-scale and large-scale fiber networks. In summary, the reinforcing core is a critical component in fiber optic closures, combining mechanical support, strain relief, and environmental protection to ensure long-term network performance and reliability .
