Principles of Optical Cable Fusion Splicing Technology

Fusion splicing joins two optical fibers end-to-end by melting their ends to form a continuous, low-loss optical path.Core Principle

Fusion splicing works by permanently fusing the bare ends of two optical fibers to create a continuous optical path with minimal signal loss and reflection. The process involves precise alignment of the fiber cores followed by application of heat to melt the glass ends, which then fuse together as they cool, forming a strong and stable joint .

Fiber Preparation and Alignment

Before splicing, the fibers are stripped of their protective coatings, cleaned, and cleaved to produce flat, mirror-like end faces. Proper cleaving is critical, as any angled or chipped surface can increase splice loss . The fibers are then placed in a fusion splicer, which uses movable stages and imaging systems to align the fiber cores with high precision. Alignment techniques include:

  • Optical Core Alignment (Profile Alignment): Uses cameras to detect the fiber cores and automatically adjust their positions for optimal light transmission .
  • LID Core Alignment (Local Injection and Detection): Measures light coupling through the fibers while adjusting their positions to maximize transmission .
Heat Application and Fusion

Once aligned, a high-temperature heat source—commonly an electric arc, but sometimes a CO₂ laser, gas flame, or electrically heated wire—is applied to the fiber ends. The heat melts the glass surfaces, and the fibers are gently pushed together to form a continuous fused joint . This ensures minimal scattering or back reflection of light and maintains the mechanical strength of the fiber.

Post-Splicing Protection

After fusion, a protective heat-shrink sleeve is applied over the splice to shield it from moisture, mechanical stress, and environmental hazards. Some splicers also include built-in OTDR or visual inspection to measure splice loss and verify quality, typically achieving losses as low as 0.01–0.05 dB for single-mode fibers .

Advantages

Fusion splicing provides:

  • Lowest optical loss and minimal reflection compared to mechanical splicing.
  • High mechanical strength and long-term reliability.
  • Stable performance unaffected by dust or alignment shifts . In summary, the principle of optical cable fusion splicing is precise core alignment followed by thermal fusion, creating a permanent, low-loss, and mechanically robust connection between optical fibers, which is essential for high-speed and long-distance optical communication networks.
